Fernweh (n.) – A German word meaning the opposite of homesickness. When you feel like you have to leave your familiar surroundings to discover new places. It is the need for distance, the wish to experience something far away from home, the urge to escape from your everyday life by traveling; A crave to travel
At one point or another, we’ve all experienced Fernweh. For some, this might result in a small case of the travel blues, such as an overwhelming urge to take a 2 week vacation from it all and go sip mai tais on a tropical beach. For others, the problem is a lot more severe. This occurs when a person’s fernweh problem morphs into full blown destination addiction, making it impossible for them to truly be happy as they’re always anticipating the next country, city and landmark. Everyday is a constant struggle, as being in a fixed location for any extended period of time starts to make you feel like a caged animal. I have always leaned towards the latter which is exactly why I have developed this portion of the blog.
In this section I will give you the tools you need to overcome destination addiction by showing you how to go about discovering the culture you so desperately crave right in your own backyard. This will allow you to keep your sanity during those dreadful periods in between your travels and help you to better cope with those phases in life where travel may not be an option.
